current state of the development about ESG

This is an assignment for the private markets class.
The professor asked each study group to write a paper on the topic “ESG (Environmental, social and corporate governance)” to answer following three questions:
(a) identify the trend (current state of the development)
(b) discuss how it would disrupt the existing business models (risks)
(c) identify market investment opportunities that it will present (opportunities)

There are three people in my group, so each group member is responsible for answering one question. My part is (a) identify the trend (current state of the development). So please define and discuss the present development state of ESG, and a little mention of ESG in the present situation of the private market. Although the topic is ESG, the professor thinks we should focus on “E” (environment). So don’t need to spend much on the discussion of SG.
