3. How and why did the British manage to defeat the rebels in 1857? How would you
characterize the events of that year?
4. Why did reform and revival movements appear in South Asia? What were their
programs? What did they achieve? (Examine trends amongst Hindus or Muslims).
5. Did the British in any way make it possible for Indians to combine to form a
national movement?
