Modifications in an Inclusive Elementary Classroom
We know that each child is unique and special in his or her own way. As educators, we may question how to provide support if you have not received any formalized training in special education. Adapting your classroom with accommodations and modifications can establish a solid foundation for the learning of all children, birth to 8 years of age.
For this discussion, first review the following resources provided in the unit:
Chapter 5 Video Case: Kristina: Modifications for a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse student in an Inclusive Elementary Classroom
Preschool Inclusion: Samantha
Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners
Then, share the following:
Identify and describe at least two (2) strategies the teachers in both videos used to manage their classrooms to support all of their students.
Discuss how the implementation of the strategies impacts the learning of typical developing peers in the classroom.
Create an additional strategy you would use for Kristina or Samantha to ensure their individual needs are met, and they are a full and valued member of their class. Include your rationale for choosing this strategy.
