where was the mound located? During which years did he excavate it? What did he find? Was this his first reported foray into the world of archeology? Do we know if he had read any accounts of archeological excavations elsewhere in America or in Europe? This was, after all, the time period when the first systematic explorations of Pompeii were being undertaken? Did his interest in mammoths develop at the same time?
