Dance from the 1600 to Today
After reading Barbara Glass Introduction to When the Spirit Moves: The Africanization of American Movement (in Module #4, Focus: Dance), watch Revelations on (Echo 360, Lecture #12, “Revelations filtered through Gramsci”) choreographed in 1960 by Alvin Ailey then explain the use of the African-Derived dance characteristics in each section of the Aileys ballet (there are three sections shown below with 3-4 dances in each section). A further explanation of symbolism using music as portrayed in social conditions as reflected through Du Bois concept of transformation vs. transfiguration should be considered to enhance your overall analysis. Chapter 14 of Souls of Black Folk provides the theoretical background.
