Civil War

1) Was the Civil War inevitable and 2) was war the only way to end slavery in the United States?

To answer this question fully requires that you discuss the following information:

1) the economic, cultural, and political differences between the North and South.  We’ve been looking at this all semester, but you can refresh yourself with material from the textbook.

2) The conflicts and attempted compromises on the way to the Civil War.  Topics in this category that you should consider include the compromises made between North and South during the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutional Convention debates, the Nullification Crises of the Alien and Sedition Act and the Tariff of Abominations, the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act,  Popular Sovereignty vs. the Free Soil Movement, and the Dred Scott Decision.

3) Some of the articles and speeches – AT LEAST one from each side – in the Final Paper Module.

NUTS AND BOLTS:  Write at least 1000 words (roughly 4 pages, double spaced).  Use at least two of the sources in the Module, plus your textbook.  (Remember to cite your sources – including the textbook – using a standard format such as MLA)
