A Review of the Contribution of Theory to Program Planning and Social
Program design and planning includes understanding the culture and values of organizations, primarily nonprofit agencies, leadership roles and skills (human relations, communication, conflict resolution, etc.), and communication collaboration and partnerships. Building and strengthening these skills are important to effectively develop and administer programs.
Examine how leadership roles and skills, including building partnerships and community collaboration, impacts program planning, design, and development.
In the previous unit (ATTACHED), you examined a social problem(s) related to the human services area you are passionate about. For this Unit, you will identify a proposed program within a nonprofit agency that you could potentially develop in the future that addresses this social problem(s).
Please respond to the following:
1. Identify a program within a nonprofit agency that you could develop in the future. This should be either a new program that does not currently exist in your community or a new service to an existing program.
2. Program design and planning include first understanding the culture and values of organizations (nonprofit agencies). Identify some potential organizational values and culture for your proposed program.
3. What leadership roles and skills will be needed to address these organizational values and cultures, including building partnerships and community collaboration?
4. How do these leadership roles and skills you identified help to address organizational values and culture? Why are they important to effective program development?
Please read the following chapter in your text:
Kettner, P. M., Moroney, R., & Martin, L. L. (2017). Designing and managing programs: an effectiveness-based approach (5th ed.). SAGE. Chapter 3: “Understanding Social Problems”
Chapter 3 will introduce you to the process of addressing social problems, stating problems as solutions, identifying a social condition, and defining problems. You will also get a better understanding of the importance of carefully thinking through the social problem(s) that need to be addressed.
