The irony of John Deweys political writings was that the thoroughness of his
critique of American political values and institutions precluded him from
offering any concrete guidance to those who sought to address the problems that
inspired him to write.
Organize an essay of 5-6 double-spaced, typewritten pages around the idea
expressed in this statement. In other words, your essay must accomplish two tasks:
1) inform the reader of the thoroughness of Deweys critique of American political values
and institutions, and 2) reveal to the reader why he did not follow his critique with
concrete alternative proposals. Where possible, use the readings to support your
