Your second paper should be 3 pages in length. It should be an expository paper, or an informative essay. You can choose to define a term, describe a process, classify an object or idea, or describe a way to divide a group in to smaller divisions. You should have a strong thesis statement and use descriptions and examples to support your ideas.
Genre: Exposition
Purpose: To explain a concept, define a confusing term or new trend, or classify or divide different aspects of a topic, style or group.
Audience: Teacher and classmates
Tone: Somewhat formal. Consider how you can best convey your message (logos), find your voice (ethos), and engage your reader (pathos). Support your main points with personal experience and/or examples from life or anecdotes. You may also use research, statistics, and quotations from experts but be sure to cite your sources in MLA format.
Assignment: Write 3 pages about a concept or an idea. Explain why this concept is relevant or why it needs clarification. Write a clear thesis statement that explains your definition or classifications in the introduction. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence that defines an aspect or explains a classification. Address alternative definitions. Use appropriate MLA citation if you cite an outside source.
Format: Double-spaced, no larger than 12 pt Times New Roman font. In your heading, include your name and the date and the name of the course (Engl 101). Include an engaging title, centered above your text. Use parenthetical citation within the body of your paper and include a Works Cited bibliography at the end in MLA format.
