Visual analysis is a large part of the discipline of art history. In your essay, you will perform a visual analysis of a particular work of art in the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona. You will visit the museum with your discussion classes on Friday, April 11th. Instructions for the museum visit:
NOTE: Dominique’s Friday discussion section will not meet; instead, the honors students need to attend one of Megan or Stephanie’s classes (9:00 am, 10:00 am, 11:00 am or 12pm), and go to the Center for Creative Photography with their discussion section.
• Very Important: Arrive to the regular classroom where we hold Friday discussions on time so you do not to miss any instructions • No gum, tobacco products, food, or drink are allowed in the museum • Only pencil and paper are allowed in the galleries. NO pens. • Please bring a notebook or a book to write on, there are not enough clipboards at the CCP for everyone. • You are not allowed to take pictures in the gallery. Assignment: This assignment is a visual analysis of a piece of art; however, it will also include your personal responses the work. Choose one photograph from the Center for Creative Photography exhibit, Departures and Arrivals. In your essay, explain why you chose that particular work of art, as well as how it relates to anything you have learned in class. Begin your essay with a description of the work’s medium, size, and composition. You will need to use art historical terms (e.g., line, shadow, etc.) in your visual analysis. The formal visual analysis should be at least 1 ½ full pages long (2 full pages for honors students), while the final portion of your essay will be your own reactions to the work and how it relates your new art historical knowledge. The entire essay needs to be 3 complete pages (4 for honors students). This essay does not require any context, iconographic background, or research from outside sources (e.g. web sites). The only outside information you that you are allowed to use and need to cite will come from the museum placard, along with information you learned from the guided tour, textbook, and lectures. Your essay should clearly state the title, artist, and date(s) of the photograph. You will have a peer review (for credit) in your discussion section on April 18th. That day you will need to bring a minimum of 2 full pages (3 full pages for Honors students) of your essay draft for peer editing. You are welcome and encouraged to ask your TA questions and show them drafts, but only up until Monday, April 21st.

A note on the expectations of this essay: Given that this is a response paper, you may use the first person as well as your opinions; however, remember to you need to use professional prose. You should write clearly and cogently, using good grammar and sentence structure. Remember to proofread your work. Though this essay will partially be your opinion, all ideas that are not originally yours must be cited in Chicago Manual Style. Any information taken from a source that is not (correctly) cited will be considered plagiarism. Plagiarism is a punishable offense in this class as well as the university. Your essay must be properly formatted according to the syllabus (see pages 3-4). This essay will be graded using a rubric, which includes proper grammar, clarity of writing, use of art historical terms, and more.
