Respond to the following questions in two short essays of 2-3 paragraphs each:

From “Behold the Stone Age”:

1) Consider the different theories behind the purpose of the Cro-Magnon cave art described in “Behold the Stone Age”. What do you think the artists’ purposes were? What is the value of the cave art today? Explain your answer.

2) Think about the definitiion of “art” that is employed in the article. In addition to offering aesthetic pleasure, how else do you define art? What is the distinction between art and “functional images”? Discuss in detail with supporting examples.

From “The Vanishing City”:

1) What are the similarities between anthropologists’ work, as described in “Behold the Stone Age”, and contemporary archaeologists’ work, as described in “The Vanishing City”?

2) Why is White interested in analyzing the inspection materials passed on to her by the Bureau of Land Management? What has she learned from these materials?

3) Why does White claim there is “a trace of Burning Man in every society”? does your reading of “Behold the Stone Age” support or refute this claim?
