Rhetorical Theory

Option 4: Taking a Position in the Debate
This option gives you an opportunity to stake out an informed position on some of the big philosophical questions in rhetorical theory. For example, what should be included in our definition of rhetoric? Is rhetoric just about style and delivery (ala Peter Ramus) or does it also include matters of proof, invention, and arrangement? Do you agree or disagree with Sally Miller Gearharts argument that rhetoric intended to persuade and change others is an oppressive and hierarchical practicethat is an act of violence?Youwill want to develop a thesis that reveals your position in the debate and then support that position with evidence and reasoning from your research of the required outside sources and thoughtful consideration of the various perspectives that inform the debate.
